What recent guests emphasize

Comfortable historic charm with attentive hospitality

Guests appreciate the inn’s prime location, cozy atmosphere, and welcoming staff, balanced with some practical considerations related to the building’s age and amenities.

Guests often praise

  • Friendly and accommodating staff who go above and beyond, including during unexpected situations
  • Comfortable and well-furnished rooms with thoughtful decor reflecting New England character
  • Cleanliness throughout the property, especially in guest rooms and bathrooms
  • Highly comfortable beds that many describe as ideal for a restful sleep
  • Convenient location within walking distance to downtown, train station, and local attractions

Worth knowing

  • Some guests have experienced issues with heating noises and inconsistent hot water
  • As a historic inn, some facilities and room sizes can feel dated or smaller compared to newer hotels
  • Guests noted occasional smells from the kitchen area in common spaces
  • Breakfast is decent but not highlighted as a standout feature
  • Limited amenities compared to larger hotels, so expectations should be aligned with a boutique inn experience

Best for

  • Travelers seeking a charming and characterful stay with historic New England ambiance
  • Visitors who value proximity to Phillips Exeter Academy, local museums, and downtown Exeter
  • Guests looking for attentive service and a welcoming environment
  • LGBTQ+ travelers appreciating a friendly and inclusive atmosphere
  • Anyone wanting a cozy, boutique-style inn rather than a modern, high-amenity hotel

Great overall stay from friendliness of staff to accommodations. Even opened up the kitchen on a closed night to make sure guests had food to eat during snow storm. It was much appreciated and delicious.

We have stayed in this Inn once a year for four years, always at Christmas time. We choose it for it's location and historic charm. However, being that it is old, there always seems to be something that isn't quite right. This time it was an issue with hot water and noisy heat. Staff was attentive and did their best to remedy the situation. If you want sleek and new don't stay here.

This was my first time staying at the Exeter Inn. I had chosen a different hotel in town a few times. I like to visit Exeter in occasion for a relaxing weekend getaway. This hotel caught my eye again once I saw it's location. This is within walking distance from the train station and it's also close to downtown. For the price, this could not be beat. I arrived later due to a train delay. The staff were so welcoming and understanding. I was able to sneak in a later dinner at Epoch, then go to my room for pampering. I stayed in the jacuzzi suite and I lived it! My room was quiet, very clean, the bathroom had everything I needed for pampering, and the bed was incredibly comfortable. I have never slept in a comfortable hotel bed, this bed was a dream. If you like the charm of colonial hotels, this is a fantastic option. I love that everything is within walking distance. The staff were outstanding! They were so friendly and helpful - I felt so welcomed there. I highly recommend staying here. I intend to book another stay there, soon!

We had a wonderful overnight stay at the Exeter Inn. The room decor was unique and thoughtfully done — classy with New England personality, not cookie-cutter by any means. The king bed was incredibly comfortable, and the bathroom was a standout: spacious, clean, and beautifully designed (and that smart mirror is to die for!) Every staff member we interacted with was genuinely friendly and welcoming, which made the stay feel especially warm and relaxed. We enjoyed delicious hand-crafted cocktails and really appetizing appetizers at the Epoch restaurant within the Inn. Everything felt well cared for and intentionally done. A great place to stay if you’re visiting Exeter and want comfort, character, and excellent hospitality.

We stayed at the Exeter Inn during a roadtrip to see fall foliage. The Inn itself is so charming, with a beautiful exterior and cozy rooms. The bathroom was well updated, and although we had a smaller room, it was the perfect place to unwind after a long day of travel. I left some items in the closet when we left, and the staff was so gracious to mail me the lost items. The town of Exeter is equally charming and worth a stop, and much less crowded than some of the other New England towns we stopped at along our trip. I highly recommend a stay here, and exploring the area as well!

Gorgeous old building, interior is spotless & quaint. Staff was pleasant, accommodating. Our room was clean and beautifully furnished, bed was firm and comfortable. My only complaint is that the bathroom is chilly and there's only half of a shower door. Overall a great experience, thank you Exeter Inn staff!!

Overall this was a nice getaway, but the cost did not align with the lack of amenities offered. We stayed for Valentine's weekend in the European queen suite. The biggest problem was that every hour or so the heat came to a literal crashing hault. Sounded like someone banging on our window. It repeatedly woke us. Room- small bu cozy, with a decent size bathroom. Mattress was comfy but the pillows were not. Service- was very friendly and accommodating Restuarant- food was delicious and although it was extra was nice to have inside the hotel.

The Exeter Inn was a lovely experience. I was always greeted warmly no matter the time of day. My room was small, but clean and cozy. The tea and cookies that are put out at 4:00 every day were so lovely to arrive to after a long day! The breakfast choices were more than ample. My only comment is that the downstairs area smells a bit like a greasy kitchen. Overall, I had a great time and would be very happy to return! Thank you again for a very nice stay.
